Course
Description |
| This
is an art class. Though we will learn the technical theory and basics
of video post production, this will serve as a foundation of
making non-traditional time-based art work.
We will explore digital video art and production.
Many want to take this class as a strict production/software training class. THIS CLASS IS NOT THAT. We will learn software but the more important point is to learn how and why to use the tool. The software is fairly easy to use, you can learn it from the manual, the application of editing is a constant learning process.
As we are going through a major communications revolution we
will avoid the standard production genres. This class is about
personal art expression, not the remaking of tired television
themes. The class and projects will be developed around experimentation
and innovation in video.
An emphasis will be placed on the post production process.
The following software programs will be taught:
Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack, LiveType.
However, these programs will be used as tools for the
production of art. We
are here to develop a new aesthetic and understanding of this
very powerful and pervasive medium.
Documentary video will be the genre of video of production that
will be the primary focus of the class. The assignments will center on documentary production.
Critical analysis is the basis for understanding and making
art. As such writing
and discussing art works in class will constitute a significant
portion of the class.
I want to foster and facilitate a positive learning environment in the classroom. Each student will be taking this class with more or less experience in making videos/art. The classroom should be a place for experimentation and thoughtful discussions. As thinking and talking about the artmaking process will consume a major portion of classtime, these discussion will be facilitated to ensure comments are useful and thoughtful as well.

Format |
1.
Discussions. We
will discuss pertinent issues and topics revolving around video/multimedia/art.
This implies that there will be talking.
This means that you will talk and not sit, staring blankly.
2. Lecture/demonstrations/hands-on.
3. Writing.
You will be given only one writing project
4. Video projects.
You will given assignments for class review and discussion. |
| Attendance
Policy |
| Be here and
be on time. Three unexcused absences/lateness result in one whole grade
drop. Excuses follow
standard university policy. |
| Assignments

All assignments
must be handed in on time. On time means at the beginning of class.
Assignments not handed at the beginning of the class
on the due date will result in a grade penalty. Late assignments will drop a letter grade
for each class period of lateness.
The final
project must be finished and prepared for viewing the 10th
week. This project
will be presented as part of the Art and TechShow. All
students must present a video work during this show. Failure to have the project presented will result in a failing
grade for the class.
Both midterms
and the final will require a MANDATORY attendance to a crit. All students must attend these crits. Failure to attend a crit will result in
a failing grade for the project. Please talk to me BEFORE if you have a conflict/issue with attendance. |

Grades
are established on a point system up to 100. They are broken down in the following
manner:

pts Class participation/attendance (i.e. DISCUSSING)
11 pts Bio Assignment (video about you)

pts Documentary Assignment (first draft)

pts Artist Statement...What you want to do with your art making/why you make art

Whatcha Watchin...a link of interest of something you found on the Internet

pts Final Project (re-work of your first draft)
Each video assignment will be considered both from a technical
aspect and an artistic aspect, the final grade reflecting the
sum of the two. |

100-90
= A range (90-93 = A-)
80-89 = B range (87-89 = B+, 80-83 = B-)
70-79 = C range (77-79 =C+, 70-73 = C-)
60-69 = D range (67-69 = D+, 60-63 = D+)
0-59 = Failure

THE USE OF COPYRIGHTED MUSIC STRICTLY PROHIBITED AND WILL RESULT IN A 1 LETTER GRADE DROP FOR CLASS.

Video
vs Film
This is a video class. When
we shoot video we say "I am taping." When we watch video we say "I am watching a video." This is not a film class. In film class you can say that you are
"filming" or that you are watching a "film." Embrace video, do not give it a complex by referring to it
as film.
"Telling
the end" issue
For academic reasons I will, from time to time, disclose the ending
of certain films/videos.
This is to facilitate discussion and is not meant to spoil
your watching experience. |
