I was annoyed with the NYTimes blogger on television dedicated a number of her entries on this young lady who may or maynot have been real (she wasn't). Whether it was the media attention or her viral success, she and her creators, good or bad, made a mark in blog history. The site, even after her "outing" generates considerable traffic.

rocketboom
A mildly humorous take on web news, started in 2004, became a fairly popular website. Rumors surrounded the site about the amount of money that was being negotiated for ad space (at one time I read that a preroll spot was going to go for $8,000 per episode). Before the big monetization there was the issue of Amanda Congdon's, the site's perky host, departure...was she kicked out by evil Andrew Baron or was it hubris? Anyway their hostilities were covered gleeful detailed on the Web and, in a few cases, on both of the respective protaganists' blogs. I higly suggest reading the reference sections in the Wiki entry for the dirty details.

evolution of dance
This is still (2007) one of the highest viewed videos on the web. Popularity breeds success. But, it is a good example of the elements that help a video go viral. Simple, mildly humorous, and able to be understood internationally.
